    Digital Lighting with DALI: Dimming, Control, and Interoperability

    DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) is a bidirectional communication protocol designed for control and information exchange among components within a lighting system. Its core features are as follows:

    • Open protocol. Any manufacturer may adopt it freely without proprietary licensing.
    • DALI-2 certification ensures interoperability. Mandatory product certification guarantees that devices from different brands work together in the same system.
    • Easy installation. Power and control wires can be run in parallel without shielding, simplifying wiring.
    • Flexible topology. Supports star, tree, daisy-chain, or hybrid topologies to suit various building layouts.
    • Digital communication, precise dimming. Digital signal transmission ensures that multiple devices receive identical dimming commands simultaneously, delivering stable, flicker-free, and accurate brightness control.
    • Individual addressing, flexible control. Every device in the system has a unique address, enabling single-light control, group management, and scene presets, greatly enhancing lighting management flexibility.

    DALI vs. 1-10V

    Although both DALI and 1-10V are protocols developed by the lighting industry, their technical capabilities differ significantly:

    Addressing

    DALI supports individual addressing, grouping, and scene presets for flexible adjustment; 1-10V has no addressing capability, so all devices can only be controlled uniformly.

    Signal type

    DALI uses digital signals, so dimming commands are precise and consistent, with good synchronisation across multiple lights; 1-10V uses analogue signals, which are susceptible to line losses and interference, resulting in poorer dimming consistency.

    Standardisation

    DALI’s dimming curves and command sets are defined by an international standard (IEC 62386), making devices from different brands interchangeable; 1-10V dimming curves have never been standardised, so mixing brands may cause noticeable brightness differences.

    Functional scope

    1-10V supports only on/off and linear dimming; DALI supports colour temperature control, colour tuning, emergency lighting testing, status feedback, complex scene management, and many other advanced functions.

    Can all DALI products be mixed?

    Early DALI-1 had a limited command set, and some manufacturers added proprietary custom commands, leading to compatibility issues across brands.

    DALI-2 substantially expands the standard command set, eliminating the need for vendor-specific extensions and thereby ensuring compatibility. More importantly, all products bearing the “DALI-2” logo must pass independent certification authorised by the DiiA (Digital Illumination Interface Alliance), strictly complying with IEC 62386 to guarantee cross-brand interoperability.

    New and old products can be mixed. A DALI-2 system can accommodate existing DALI-1 devices-basic dimming will work normally, but the newer DALI-2 features (such as advanced diagnostics and support for additional device types) will not be available.
    DALI vs. KNX, LON, BACnet, Zigbee, and Casambi
    KNX & BACnet: The Masterminds of Building Automation

    KNX-Europe’s most popular open standard for building automation. It centrally manages lighting, HVAC, security, blinds, and all other subsystems through a single system, supports wired, wireless, and other media, and offers broad interoperability across brands. Ideal for high-end villas and large commercial complexes that demand deep integration.

    BACnet-A protocol purpose built for Building Automation Systems (BAS). It excels at knitting together lighting, HVAC, fire safety, and other subsystems into a unified supervisory platform. With strong IT-friendliness, it is the top choice for mega-scale public buildings, airports, hospitals, and other complex facilities.

    In projects, DALI is often deployed as a lighting sub-system beneath KNX or BACnet, connected via a gateway. For instance, KNX or BACnet serves as the backbone, managing multiple DALI lighting loops to enable fine-grained dimming and centralized oversight.

    LON: The Veteran of Building Automation

    An early open standard that emphasises device-level intelligence-each node (e.g., luminaire, sensor) can process information independently. Although new installations are now rare, many legacy buildings still run extensive LON networks.

    Zigbee: The Mainstream Choice for Smart Homes

    A low-power, low-data-rate wireless mesh protocol. It is cost-effective and flexible, widely used in consumer-grade products like smart bulbs, sensors, and plugs. However, its stability can be compromised by environmental factors, and it lacks the precision dimming and status feedback required for professional lighting, thus it is not well suited for large-scale commercial lighting applications.

    Casambi: The Go-to Solution for Retrofits

    A fully wireless professional lighting control system based on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Mesh. Its key strength is the elimination of control wiring-everything can be set up and operated via a smartphone app. Perfect for retrofitting older buildings, flexible office spaces with movable partitions, and any scenario where cabling is impractical or high agility is needed. On the downside, it is a relatively closed ecosystem, and its wireless coverage and stability demand careful engineering.

    How DALI Works

    The core of a DALI system is a two-wire bus that transmits digital signals between input devices (sensors, switches, etc.) and application controllers. The application controller acts as the system’s “brain”: it receives input signals, applies programmed logic, and generates commands that are sent to execution devices such as LED drivers.

    Main components:
    • Bus power supply (PSU)-Maintains the bus voltage at a stable 16 V DC, providing energy for communication.
    • DALI drivers (built into LED luminaires)-Receive and decode DALI commands over the bus to control light output. DALI-2 drivers offer richer functionality and more reliable interoperability than earlier versions.
    • Input devices (sensors, switches, etc.)-Send information to the application controller using 24-bit data frames; they do not communicate directly with drivers.
    • Application controller-Receives input signals, generates DALI commands according to programmed logic (e.g., “turn on when motion detected”, “turn off when daylight sufficient”), and sends them over the bus to the drivers for execution.

    DALI wiring essentials (quick reference for site work)
    • Topology choice-Bus, star, or tree topologies are acceptable; do not wire as a ring or mesh.
    • Voltage level-Bus voltage is approximately 16 V, but it is not SELV (Safety Extra Low Voltage). Use cables rated for 300/500 V.
    • Polarity-No polarity; the two DALI wires can be connected either way (terminals marked DA, DA indicate non-polarity).
    • Shielding-Not required; ordinary multi-core cables are sufficient.
    • Cable selection-Recommended: 5 or 6 core cable (cross-section ≥ 1.5 mm²) run together with mains wiring. Maximum communication distance: 300 metres.
